We're Supernatural Protection & Investigations, known as SPI. We battle the real monsters of myth and legend, but this Halloween we're searching for diamonds....
A gala opening at the Metropolitan Museum of Art has attracted the upper crust of Manhattan - and thieves. A trio of vile harpies attacks the crowd and steals the stars of the exhibition: a colorful cluster of seven cursed diamonds known as the Dragon Eggs. In the right mage's hands, each stone can pack a magical wallop. Together they have the power to "cure" the supernaturals of the tristate area - but for many of those vampires and werewolves, that means turning into dust.
I'm Makenna Fraser, a seer for SPI. With the help of my partner, Ian, and the other agents, I have 24 hours to prevent total global panic, find the diamonds, and save the supernatural community. No biggie....

A big bad Russian mobster Dragon, Viktor Kain, is coming to New York to exhibit the famous Dragon Eggs, a collection of powerful diamonds, he intends to auction off. 5 are cursed diamonds from earth, but the sixth one is stolen from the Goblin treasury, and the last one is stolen from the elves a long time ago. SPI is involved to protect the exhibition in the Met, as many mortals and arcanes would love to get their hands on the treasures.
So when a harpy statue comes to live, and the harpies kill some guards and steal the diamonds, chaos results. A young man tries to prevent the theft, but he is of course no match for the harpies. But when he touches one of them, a bright flash goes off, burning the harpy. Still, she easily swipes him aside. Mac helps him though, keeping him safe from further harm. The young man, Ben Sadler is a diamond appraiser for Christie’s, on a special assignment for a client.
Mac and her partner Ian take him with them to a SPI safehouse, but on the road they are attacked again by the harpies, wanting to steal Ben this time. They totally ruin Yasha’s van, and the werewolf agent is not happy about that at all. So he goes werewolf on the harpies and makes them back away. They have no other choice but to take Ben to headquarters with them now. And there he is tested to be a level 10 gem mage, something he did not know about himself. He is very powerful and totally untrained, but he is willing to help them when he finally believes the arcane world is real.

But their lead to Ben’s client turns cold when they find the man turned to stone by a Gorgon. There are only 3 Gorgon’s in New York, and they are all accounted for. Mac’s boss, Vivienne Sagodraco, is friends with one of them, as they are both older than Rome …
Mac learns a lot about Gorgon’s, and how to kill one, which is not easy to do.

They need to find those Diamond Egg diamonds before Halloween night, because if a powerful gem mage activates those Diamonds, every Arcane in the city will be “cured” from their affliction, meaning that all those arcane’s who started out as humans, will be human again, and instantly turned to dust.

Of course Victor Kain is not giving up on his possessions either, no one comes between a dragon and his hoard, and he has evil plans himself, as he has been an enemy of Vivienne for a long time…

Another action filled book in the SPI files series, and I loved it. I like Mac a lot, she is young and human although she is a seer. She also has a crush on her partner Ian, but knows getting involved is not a good idea. Then there is the powerful goblin Rake Danescu who wants her, and she is really tempted by him. But he is a very handsome goblin, intrigue and deception are in his blood, and even though nothing has ever been proven, he is a criminal. Does he only want to employ Mac, or does he want more?

I loved it, new arcane races are introduced and I did guess the traitor right, but of course not the how and why. It is a good story, a good mystery, and great characters. I would love to work there, but unfortunately, I don’t have the skills.

9 stars.
